# To understand the US, we must also understand the British Empire
The US is both born from Britain, as its former colony with much of its demographic and cultural heritage hailing from the British Isles, and is the successor to the British Empire. Thus, in order to fully understand the US, we must first understand the British Empire’s politics, cultural norms, and geopolitical strategy.
More importantly, we need to examine what led to Britain’s rise and fall as a global empire. It is the only empire in history to match the US’s global breadth, maritime disposition, and dominant industrial wealth. By understanding what made Britain successful and what led to its fall, we can better understand how the US should navigate its position at the top of the global hierarchy.
